do you mean only add 5 logs around the center?
if that's what you want to do you can- no one ever said log cabin blocks have to be big= or have a dozen logs-
as far as fabrics go- most of my log cabins have a center piece= then light strips on two sides and dark logs on the other two sides.

Yes you can do anything. Before you start do a board search for log cabin quilts and study all the pictures. Every LC is unique. Post pics' of your fabric and which lay out of the blocks you are going to use. We will be better able to comment for you!

You can do what you like. Log cabin blocks have a dark side and a light side and sometimes a bright square in the center, often red. If you stick to that light/dark contrast, you'll get the graphic effect that we love about the Log cabin. The rest is up to you. You can use just 2 colors if you like-- a light one and a dark one.
Me? I like them waaaaaaaaay scrappy, so I use at least 40 or 50 different fabrics.

If you hit control on your keyboard and keep the key down as you look at these photos AND roll the roller on your mouse it will enlarge the photos by as much as you want. You will able to see how many different fabrics I used for these log cabin and courtstep blocks.
Like someone earlier said, it's your quilt and you can do what you wanna! Kinda like that old song, it's my party and...

Sewextreme, nice LC. I really like the way you did the center blocks on your LC
