Default Can you use corduroy as a backing?

Can corduroy be used as a backing? I have a friend who is planning on doing that, on her first quilt which is a Hawaiian quilt. She hasn't asked my advice and sort of resented advice I gave her earlier...so I thought I would ask before I suggested she not do that. She lives on the east coast and I am in Texas, so I haven't seen either her quilt top or her backing fabric.

So, has anyone used corduroy?

Thanks,
Dina

You can use almost fabric to make a quilt. Corduroy would not be my first choice but if she just wants to use her walking foot and straight quilting, it should be okay.

I've used plenty of corduroy in quilts. I like it better in quilts than in pants
Corduroy, flannel and denim all make wonderful quilts. Remember- there are no (Rules) a person can mix all kinds of fabrics, just because it might not be (Your Choice) doesn't make it wrong. Just different from what You might choose

I have never used corduroy as a backing. Not sure what the shrinkage would be and it is normally much heavier that either flannel or cotton. Watch what needle you use for the thickness.

My first concern would be the size of wale on the corduroy and if you could manage to keep it 100% straight on the backing. This article has some interesting info on good quality etc. http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/...duroy/page/all

Corduroy would meke for a very heavy quilt & would make it take forever to dry.

I did use unwashed corduroy as a backing for closely quilted potholders with cotton batting. I love the way they looked after machine washing and drying. Like the others have noted, it could be done, but would make for a heavy quilt.

I like corduroy with denim and heavy flannel.

Corduroy also comes in different weights and fiber content.

I made a corduroy and denim quilt..backed it with flannel and didn't use any batting...still I had to tie it rather than quilt it. it weights a ton but is just what my DGS wanted. One good thing is it will NEVER wear out!
