Fabric won't feed through my machine!!! Any suggestions?
#1
I have a Singer 1425 sewing machine. My husband bought this machine for me in the late 70's and I was told it is the last Singer that has metal gears. Until today I've never had any problems with it. Today when I started to sew and the fabric won't feed. I've taken it apart and cleaned all the lint out. Checked everything and it all looks okay. Changed the needle and rethreaded. Changed the bobbin thread.
I can't afford to take it into the shop right now. Does anybody have any suggestions on what else I could try to do on my own.

I haven't moved the feed dogs and I haven't adjusted the stitch length. It was sewing perfect this morning earlier.........then I went and did my daily chores. Set back down..........and now the feed dogs won't move and it won't pull the fabric through. Just sits there and sews in one position.
Flustrating to say the least.

While you're in there looking at the belt, look at the "hook gear" assembly (down in the feed dog area under the machine), to make sure the "teeth" of the gear have not worn down & are still functional. (If they are too smooth to move the feed dogs, the part is about $13 or so to replace.)
I'm sure you will get great suggestions on what to look for, so good luck.

Carla P,
Thank you for all your help. I just completely removed the case of the machine so I could see the belt. It has 2 belts and they are both fine. I was investigating farther and found the problem. It has a broken gear. It's a small one that connects with a larger one. When I manually turned the gear..........or should I say what's left of it........the feed dogs moved properly.
I'll check and see if I can get the get the part and repair it myself. If not I'll have to take it in and have it repaired. It'll be a couple of weeks before I can do that. In the meantime I have my Grandmother's sewing machine and I can use it.
Once again, thank you for all your help.
