Christmas...quilt or not

I was making a few quilts for folks in the family that I do not buy presents for...my husband encourages me to make the quilts but he said...if you start giving them as Christmas gifts they will feel they need to give you a gift and 2. they may expect a gift every year...Good point...so instead I am giving them out as I make them...; ) For my Kids and there spouses and their future children they will continue to get them since they will always get Christmas gifts..I also like the idea of one woman here that has a box of future gifts for here future grandchildren...when they get to a certain age they get different quilts/hand made gifts...so they will always remember her and that she had them on her mind with love...Great idea....

When I was expecting my third child, my mom, knowing that I was hoping for a little girl (after two boys) crocheted a beautiful pink sweater, bonnet, and booties and, since we didn't have routine ultrasounds in those days, she also crocheted the same pattern in yellow. My daughter wore the pink as an infant. When my daughter was five, my mom passed away and, when I was going through her things, I found the yellow set with a note explaining why she had made them. I put them away for 23 years and when my daughter married and was expecting her first baby, gave them to her at her baby shower with the card. That little yellow sweater set caused the whole roomful of ladies to weep, but many of those ladies have taken to making gifts for their "unborn future grandchildren" Mama had no idea of the future impact of her thoughtfulness!

Just talked to my quilting neighbor on Sunday. She doesn't expect to have any more grandchildren arrive now. Anticipating that greatgrands will be coming in the next 10 to 20 years, she has decided to make a number of baby quilts this winter, and save them for the future. Even if she is gone, there should ge quilts for those greatgrands.

I started making my grandchildren rag quilts when they turned 8 years old. At the time I didn't have so many. Now I have 18 going on 20 counting the step children. As of now I have 5 to go. When they move into their first home of their own, will make them another nice pieced quilt. So far just one of them given, with 19 to go. I gifted all of my 5 Children one for Christmas 2 years ago as a family gift, and they know they won't be getting one every year, but never really thought that It could obligate them.
