I was in a shop last week and the owner showed me how to test the fabric before buying.
Take a white piece of paper and rub it over the fabric. If color comes off, means it will bleed and need prewashing.

I don't spend time worrying, fussing, testing, spending $ on color catchers etc. Everything gets washed so there are no surprises or headaches.

I wouldn't rely on that as the only test! If it does that yes, you've a got a problem on your hands. Though it may not do that ... it can still be a bleeder.

I'm with her!

But for the first wash - reds go with red, blues with blues, etc. - and I watch the water.

If there is more color than I want to see - I go after the "culprit" and spend more time with it. :hunf:

Like Three Peas in a Pod, are we!
My theory ... abuse it all to h@#$* NOW ... and prevent the tears later!

There are some fabrics that don't exactly "bleed" - but the color seems to rub off easily.
