    Default Continuous Line?

I am making a Frozen quilt from a panel for my granddaughter. I would like to just use snowflake outlines as my quilting. They would be randomly placed on the quilt but within space guidelines required of the batting. There wouldn't be a continuous line between the snowflakes. Will the lack of a continuous line cause the batting to bunch up? Will this work?

    Thank you.

If I understand your question, you want to randomly place "motifs" on the quilt, close enough to hold the batting per requirements, but not connected. I do this on my embroidery machine all the time! I made a Quilt of Valor with stars of different sizes, just put them where they were pleasing to me, about 4" or so apart. It has been well loved for several years now, washed, dried, etc. and is still stunning...no bunching! Snowflakes sound lovely, go for it!

You don't need a continuous line, just enough quilting shapes within the required miminum spacing distance. I would place your snowflakes in alternating spots, not all in a straight line to insure your coverage, which sounds like what you were planning to do.

i agree... quilting lines do not have to be connected

Wonderful! Thank you. I didn't really see any harm but just don't want to mess this up.

Motifs placed separately- Advantage, less danger of getting puckers between motifs. Disadvantage, you will need to knot and bury your threads at each snowflake or stitch in place.

Also, check the info on your batting package. It will tell you the maximum distance apart your snowflakes need to be.

great minds think alike! I did snowflakes on the Frozen quilt that I made too!

I am far from an expert and my snowflakes may not be the best - but I will just echo what others have said.. no need to be continuous line and the type of batting will be important. I used the warm and white that allows quilting up to 10" apart. Its been 2 years and so far so good batting is behaving
