Was at a Ricky Tims' seminar yesterday where he covered this and showed a number of variations he had done. I also have the book. The most intriguing (IMHO), were made from his hand dyed fabrics with spirals. I'm a bit of a traditionalist, but after this seminar (also featuring Alex Anderson) I will be trying a few if their ideas. Ricky explained that his instructions were to get you started, then let your creative brain take over.

I agree with quilttiger that a class would be a good choice. I made one and it came out well. I have the book, you could probably find one willing to sell theirs. Along with this group, there are other quilting/sewing sites that you could search.
