If you're still in the planning stage, have you tried checkerboarding the nine patch in the center and piano key boarding the stripes around the edge.

Five of the striped blocks have a paler color on the outsides (mostly pale yellow), while the other 16 blocks all have deeper tones on the outsides. As others noted, the pale yellow doesn't contrast as much with the solid white blocks, so I might have all the pale yellow blocks go upright. As it is, your colors are really neat for a small child. I'm not sure how you could follow Zone's idea of roads, but it is an intriguing idea for a little guy.

Row 3, 3rd 9patch, I would give that one a quarter turn.

I love all the bright colors and I think he will also love it. My anal side says to alternate the 9 patch so you have a white corners then a colored corner then a white corner, etc. I love the idea made by quilting candy about putting them on a diagonal. Might be very interesting..... If so, I would probably use the striped blocks with the stripes going in the same direction. But, there are always many different ways to go and we would make ourselves crazy playing with them all. He is just going to love how bright and colorful it is and later he will treasure that you made it for him.

Love the bright colors in this quilt! What I did notice was the four corner 9 patches - three have colored squares in the outside corners and the top left has white. I think I would switch it out for the first block in row 5.

I would swap the top left 9 patch with the left 9 patch in the 3rd or 5th row. that way all your corners have solid colors then your border could be a flange with a couple colors.
