Do you always know who your project is for, or where it will go, before you start?

I haven't done one yet without knowing where it will go. Guess I just haven't gotten there yet. A lot of the satisfaction I get from quilting is knowing that I donate them to either children or wounded soldiers. That keeps me working on them, as I can picture happy faces, even though I'll never see them in person. I do have a couple of patterns I'd like to try, but I'm pretty sure the end result, if it turns out good enough, will be a charity quilt. Either I make and keep a quilt in my already full home, OR I use that space for more fabric I can buy and fondle. Which would you choose?
