Should I trim the little bits off the corner before peicing this together with other pieces? My block consists of 3 of these and one solid color.

Yes I do.
I make all the ones I need. Then, while I watch TV in the evening, I use scissors to clip all the "ears".

I too make all the blocks I need and then trim all the dog ears off of them at the same time. Good habit to get into.

Yes trim them... the only time I don't is when I need those ears to help align some blocks, like when making OBW's :D:D:D

I trim as I go, Takes less time. Then again you will learn to do what is most comfortable to you.
