Default Does Anyone Know More About The Swamp Angel Quilt Block?

A friend just came across her Grandmother's Swamp Angel quit and was wondering what the history behind the name and the block was. She has searched online, but hasn't turned up any information. It's such an unusual name for a star block that we figured there must be a history there.

Anxious to see other replies. Have never heard of it before. Maybe some of her relatives would know the history.

The swamp angel was a cannon. There is also a folk tale by that name.

Here's a link to the book: http://www.amazon.com/Swamp-Angel-An.../dp/0140559086
I did find some information about the cannon too but not about the quiltblock.

I looked it up on Electric Quilt and that layout is called Star Variation. So many blocks over the decades have been given different names. Never hear of this name before.

Thanks for all the responses! The family that would know has passed on, so she was left with a lot of questions and a beautiful quilt. I haven't heard of the Star Variation name, though. It's funny how these blocks travel and pick up so many different names, lol.

Maggie Malone (author of 5,500 Quilt Block Designs) attributes the Swamp Star block to Nancy Cabot. Here's more info on Cabot, but not on that block in particular. http://www.quiltindex.org/essay.php?kid=3-98-40
It seems that she, like many others in the 20's and 30's, was fond of renaming blocks and making up stories to go with the new names.

This block is used in a lot of sampler quilts. Would love to find out history. Will watch this also?
