I just have a quick question. Has anyone made a doggie blanket/ quilt and put a piece of the silvery "emergency type" blanket in it? It looks like Mylar. My crazy dogs love to lay on the porch both are getting older and I thought the emergency blanket would reflect their heat back to them. Any suggestion greatly appreciated!

I never did but it sounds like a great idea. Do they like laying under the "emergency" blanket right now? Is it crinkly. My doggie likes my quilts and fleece blankets. Please post with what you come up with. It sounds like a great idea.

Hi there,

I have never used the mylar, but I have made several quilts/pads/beds for dogs over the years. What I have liked to use, especially if your dogs a bigger, is a top layer of the "egg carton" foam for mattresses. It seems to be more comfortable for the dogs as they age and develop arthritis. Another insulating idea might be the heat resistant batting such as Insul-Bright. I have no idea which would work best, but probably the mylar. Or you could go belts-and-suspenders and use both!

I'm trying to visual/remember. But I'm thinking any holes would quickly deteriorate the Mylar. Can you sew a corner and see if it holds up to sewing? Otherwise, I would go with the egg-carton foam, perhaps make an pillow case type cover, that can be removed and washed. I'm in Phoenix and wash the dogs bedding quite frequently.

I doubt that lying on top of a space blanket (aka emergency blanket) would do much to aid an elderly dog in heat retention. They are intended to be wrapped around the body to keep heat in, not laid on top of. Even when they're used for feral cat shelters, they're attached to the outside of the box, not inside. They are very thin, noisy, and not cozy at all. I also doubt that they are washable. I can't imagine any dog wanting to snuggle up on top of one even if it were covered with something soft.

I think perhaps a better idea would be the egg carton foam covered with faux shearling. There are many sizes pre-made and sold as pads for dog crates. My critters, dogs and cats, have always loved them and the covers are easily zipped off for machine washing and drying. My vet was the first to recommend them to me for a senior Sheltie many years ago. Entirely your decision of course.

I agree with ghostrider, use the egg carton foam and faux shearling or fleece, you can still quilt it and make it pillowcase style so you can remove and wash it.

Also, just as a reminder to bring your pets in when it's cold and cover your plants. This comment is just a reminder and not intended for anyone in particular, just a general reminder.

Thanks for all the comments! Right now my dogs have pillows that they lay on outside. And they have a quilt they lay on in the house,yes, spoiled rotten! lol! And there is always the bed with us!But they also like it outside on some of the coldest days, I think they are nuts!
I may just stick with the pillows and make a new cover for the pillows and add a layer of the egg carton foam to them. I do know they like the egg carton foam as I made a big pillow for the back of our car for when we go on vacation, I said they were spoiled, they go where we go! Thanks again.

I would suggest a thin layer of foam rubber--maybe no more than an inch. I made my elderly dog such a bed and then washed the outer cover and donated it to our animal shelter then my beloved dog passed.
