Trying to see if a neighbor's machine works and I can get it to do everything EXCEPT sew in a straight line. What do I do? At the moment he can't locate the user manual. It is a 1703 and has two knobs on front....now of them picture a straight normal line....thoughts?

Googled this and it looks like a machine that uses cams. Have you looked to see what cam is in place?

I took the cam out....LOL I tried everything and I think I finally got it, but still very unsure about the machine....on a positive note it does work!

-you need to set the stitch width to 0, Without seeing a picture, one of the knobs should do width and the other one length. If you set them at highest, stitch a bit, then lowest, and stitch, you can find out fast.

Bobbin won't wind....not sure what to think

Did you unscrew the knob in the wheel on the right? I'm assuming this is an older machine where you need to manually disengage the needle so the bobbin winder becomes engaged; I'm not familiar with this particular machine, so it could be something else.

The rubber piece that touches the wheel is worn down....will need to replace it.

Getting really upset tonight. 5 Machines and I can't quilt on any of them!

That's a common problem. I used to be able to find the replacements at Walmart; they are inexpensive if you can find them locally.

Can you simply push down on the bobbin winder with your finger to make contact? I was able to do that on some of the older machines until I could find the rubber ring replacement.

Also, I'm thinking that if you have 5 machines, you might well be able to wind bobbins on one of the other machines if this one will do the quilting for you. I've done that too -- used another machine as the bobbin winder.

Thanks Prism - the bobbin I needed to wind was from a kenmore and my other machines are Singers. After 4 hours I got at least one machine to do what I wanted! I'm sorry for being grumpy, but this was a very upsetting event. I'm happy now, the quilt is done and at least one machine works!

I found a bag of 13 rubber tires for bobbin winding! I purchased 15 of them on an ebay auction YEARS ago when I needed one for my Singer Treadle machine, so they were in the drawer of the treadle.

5 sewing machines sounds like a lot doesn't it....I teach and turned a room in my home into a studio to teach sewing. I already had a few machines from family and I purchased a $25 and a $20 one for teaching.

Kelly, I have ordered instruction manuals from the manufacturer on line. They usually come in DVD form instead of paper form, but they contain all the information. Hope this helps
