    Default Earth Tones

I've noticed that earth tone colors in quilts are almost extinct these days. Quite surprising as they always look so rich. Is this just a trend and someday they will come back with a vengeance?

come to think of it, i have noticed that, too. i suppose it waxes and wanes like the fashions. you can't use it if the store doesn't carry it and if the manufacturers don't make it! but, what about the stashes? hmmmm?

Well, let's be a manufacturer and bring earth tones back. I love them and I have many in my stash also.

Last year the quilt shop told me it was hard to purchase blue fabric because it wasn't "in"

You're just not seeing them because the big, bold, bright fabrics demand all your attention. Some prime earthy examples: Serenity by Daiwabo and EE Schenck, Toasted by Andover Fabrics, Earthtones by Norman Wyatt Jr for P&B Textiles, Forest Floor from Skipping Stones Studio for Clothworks, and many, many more before you even consider all the earthtone batiks out there.

Quilt shop owners buy wnat they like, sometimes without even knowing it. Blue is the most popular color in this country, year after year, so there's no reason for it to be "hard" for a shop owner to find if she sets her mind to it.

All the more reason to have stash. Some wonderful earth tones are available in batiks.

I was starting to think it was just my local shops choosing not to carry earth tones. I use batiks when I want that "earthy" feel... but brown batiks ( nice ones) are very hard to come by.

Wild color seems to be the trend. But I am still big on earth tones.

If you are looking for earth tones check "keepsake Quilting" They are showing many "earth tone" fabrics and patterns. Alot of these colors seem to be mute colors and are in batics. I recently made my daughter a "beige" quilt and did have to look at several places before I found all the brown/beiges that I want. In my area each quilt shop seems to carry different themes/colors. of fabric. There is one that just opened that is carring brights which I do not use/like so I will not frequent that shop but there are other shops in my area that carry colors/patterns that I like so I go there.
