Last year, I posted the following thread, seeking guidance for a top that was hand pieced by my Great Grandmother . . .

I am pleased to say that I have finished handquilting it and to stay true to NO machine stitches, have decided to bring the backing around to make the binding. My question, how to label it? Usually, I machine-embroidery a label, then applique to the back. I've even embroideried right on the backing.

Suggestions?

Personally I would do my regular style label and hand stitch it to the back of the quilt. Good job. Lots of work but well worth the effort:)

What an incredible piece of history you have.

Be sure you include as part of the label ... as many years and details of this quilt's story as you can. Also, Grandma/your names, and locations are important parts to capture.

You have a lot more patience than I do. Document EVERYTHING in your label. This will be an heirloom to pass down through your family for a very, very long time. Sounds like it's got a great head start though, since you ended up with it so far.

Being that you like embroidery, it'd be a lovely touch and certainly more lasting than any of the write-on markers that we use.

The quilt is absolutely beautiful. It will indeed be cherished for years in your family. I think you could use machine for the label because you will state who started it and when, and who finished it and when. If you do choose to hand do the label, tie down the ends. Most of the quilts I hand embroideried have lost the lettering.

Thank you all so much for such quick replies. It seems to embroidery a label will work with the only history I know. Unfortunately, my mom doesn't remember either.

Held by her Granddaughter moms name 1960-2009 Odessa, Tx
Hand quilted by her Great Granddaughter my name 2011 Kingwood, Tx"

I am gonna ask Mom to give it to my granddaughter when she passes, which will be 5 generations. This was truly a labor of love, but it did not start that way. I am real attached to it at this point.
