New Quilter - Stitching in the Ditch
Hello All - I just finished this small lap quilt top and am going to be quilting it this coming week. Its not perfect but I'm proud. I learned alot and now know where my mistakes are and how to do better next time lol. My question is - if I'm going to stitch in the ditch on this what color thread do I use? Does it matter? Any suggestions are welcome. I'm heading out in a bit to do some hiking with hubby and new puppy so will check back with you all later this afternoon. Thanks so much and hope everyone has a great day! (If the pic is tiny I'm sorry - need to learn how to make larger)

I would choose a thread color which will closely match whatever fabric I will be stitching on along the top, or whatever color fabric is in the majority on the top. Then I choose the backing dependent on that thread color. If I want it to blend in and not contrast, I choose a like colored backing with a pattern to it. If you want the stitching to show a lot on the back, choose a backing fabric in a contrasting color with no pattern (solid).

Good work. If I'm not anxious to have my stitches show for some reason, I usually opt for a printed backing and as neutral a thread as possible. Straight lines are sometimes a challenge if you're machine quilting and, if your backing doesn't camouflage the wobbles and missteps, it can spoil the effect you're going for. Just a thought.

Thanks everyone for your input. The back will just be cream color solid so I will use cream color thread. As this will be my first attempt at this the less it shows the better lol!! Going to get started on it tomorrow so will let you all know how it goes. XO
