Do you always wash flannel fabric, before cutting and making rag quilt?

I don't wash ANY fabric before using it! :mrgreen:

I wash all because it shrinks at different rates, and I saw one someone else did that they didn't prewash and it drew up terrible on one material, so much she was throwing it away.

fabric, before using it. Sometimes
I will even wash the flannel twice. :D
I make a lot of pj's for the grandkids!!
For me, it's better safe than sorry!!

If you're making a rag quilt(I've read) that the fabric shouldn't be washed before making. If you aren't making a rag quilt, then I would definitely wash it.

I wash everything, like Sulabug, sometimes twice. I just wouldn't be able to handle a complete mess if one fabric "misbehaved".

The only fabric I do wash is flannel. It shrinks like nobody's business!

I wash all of my fabric, no softener, iron, fold and put in respective drawers. That way, it is ready to pull out and start working with.

Flannel is no exception. It will shrink everytime, especially the cheaper ones. Better flannels aren't as bad, but will still shrink. Flannel is one of my favorite fabrics. The better teh fabric, the more soft and cuddly. Great for jammies, too.

In fact, the last two kits I have purchased from my LQS say to wash otherwise you will end up short and disappointed. In fact, I just washed some flannel today from Lyndhurst Studio by Janet Orfini. It is called 'Covenant Garden Trellis' and will be ironing it shortly.

If my fabric comes out of the dryer fairly flat and smooth, I fold it neatly and iron/press before cutting. If it's a rumpled mess, then I wonder if I realluy want to use it.
