I have a rag quilt question....I would like to make a rag quilt using blocks measuring 8 by 12 inches. Flannel for the top, filling and backing. Do I X quilt this block? The directions I have read say if you are using flannel for the filling you do not need to quilt it. Any one have ideas on this subject? I am pretty sure that the layers of flannel would not shift, but I do not want any surprises either. I really enjoy this board and all the different approaches you have to quilting. Variety is truly the spice of life.

I would...But you don't always have to use an X though, I have been known to do a reverse applique in part of the blocks to keep my layers together before! In the blocks I didnt reverse applique I just stitched the same design in them!

I did 'X' it as you suggested and it turned out very well for my first attempt at rag quilting. Thanks for the input.

Is your reverse applique going to be flannel as well?

Instead of an X across my blocks, I cut a heart template and did a heart in the center of my flannel rag quilt. I used a lightweight cotton batting.
