Default FMQ and 10 minute block - challenge yourself!

I finally got around to reading Leah Day's Free Motion Quilting Project blog. Leah challenged herself to create one FMQ pattern PER DAY - so 365 quilt designs! She was a beginner as well without any fancy equipment and since there are so many threads on FMQ and much despair from the newbies, I thought I would share the link and an idea.

The 10 minute block pattern has also been discussed a lot and whats cool about it is that if you do that center square in a plain light color, it makes a very nice little showcase for an FMQ design.

So here is the idea - make a 10 minute block quilt, any size.
Take a look at Leah's blog and see what she did for FMQ or search the forum for ideas.
http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.c...tart-here.html

Create FMQ designs in each of the centers of the 10 minute block quilt. They can all be the same or they can be different.

Post pictures of your finished work!

My thought is that these FMQ designs are small enough and easy enough to do even for newbies and the 10 minute block pattern would showcase the work very nicely.

See what you think!

I follow her site. Her work is inspirational. Thought I would try to do her designs one of these days. 10 min block is a great idea, not as overwhelming as a whole quilt top. Is there a time deadline?

Great Idea. Would this be considered a challenge?

Ha - a formal challenge would be up to Rhonda and Patrice. But I thought it was just a cool idea after seeing how Leah did all her designs in 4" square. I was trying to figure out how to doodle some myself and thought the 10 minute block provded a perfect showcase. So formal chaqllenge or not, i would love to see some - and I am going to do one after I get done with my Chinese Lanterna and Drunkard's Path! (or maybe before that....)

I would love to join in. I have never done FMQ before except to do about 5" of meandering when I was goofing off. I hate paying LAQ to quilt my quilts and if I could learn to quilt my own quilts, I could make so many more quilts because of the money I save. I've watched Leah's videos and am willing to give it a go. I already made 8 10-minute blocks. They are all from layer cakes so they are quite big and I don't mind practicing on them one bit. So, do I start watching Leah from the beginning again and make different designs on each 10 minute block. There are 5 blocks on each 10 minute block, so I could make 45 different designs. All I need is some backing and I'm ready to try. This is exciting!!! I'm willing to give quilting a try! You don't know what a big, big step this is for me!!!

I asked Rhonda if this should be a formal challenge so we will see what she says - but i would just go ahead and do it. I think everyone would love to see what you have done. i am going to take a look at Leah's blog again and i am going to definitely try a small project - maybe a wallhanging since i have 2 full size quilts in progress. i will post when i get it in gear.

So I am starting a project using the above challenge to myself. I am going to create a simple tablerunner, using 10 minute blocks as the border and I am thinking about a whole cloth design for the center. Will start posting pictures as I go but I think this is going to be FUN. Also talked to Rhonda who will investigate as a possible formal challenge.

Jeanne - do this one with me! Do a small project with the blocks you alrready have and lets see what we both come up with! This is making my brain work BIG TIME.....
