Ok here's the newbie coming out...you can buy machines that don't have bobbins?

She means bobbin cases. In a front loading (or side loading) machine there's a thing that holds the bobbin that comes out. That's the bobbin case. In a machine with a drop in bobbin, the part that holds the bobbin stays in the machine unless you're cleaning it out.

Wow now that sounds interesting! I am going to check that out!
