Shelly, I know what you mean about not being able to find any wool batting, I haven't been able to find it or just plain wool anywhere. I haven't tried looking online yet, have you? I 've just asked the shops and Joanns around me.

What about army surplus stores. My parent had a lot of wool army blankets when we were growing up.

When I was young we had heavy woven blankets, they must have been a cotton. They were called Indian blankets, They were like a felt weight. wool is not always washable so I would check on that'

As for wool batting, I have seen it on line. check the websites of the companies who make batting. :D

There are some military surplus websites, too. Our quilts growing up held us to the bed, mom said they used other quilts or wool blankets to line them. They were always so heavy that I wanted to not use it, claustrophobic as I've always been......lol lol

If buying new, I go to Walmart or Dollar general and get the polyester blankets. If thrift shopping, I just check the blankets for wear and serious stains. I then wash both used and new ones. I feel once they are inside the quilt, it makes them heavy, especially large quilts. My daughter prefers the sheet or thin cotton blankets be used, they are just the weight she likes, but I prefer heavy ones. I like to use blankets when tieing. They are sturdy, and hold up to years of use. My kids still have theirs I made for them 23 and 21 years ago. Good luck

Yes, BEWARE. Wool shrinks when washed. Get a cotton or acrylic blanket. I get acrylic for $5 or 6 at WM on sale. Easy to find at yard sales and thrift shops. Also wool batts can be purchased online for several hundred dollars, and have to be soaked and air dried or dry cleaned.
