Just went to a workshop this weekend and this came up. The suggestion was to use 1/4 cup Dawn in a bathtub of water. Agitate in an up and down motion for about 15 min - pull quilt to the back of the tub, drain, fill tub again and agitate up and down again without adding more detergent. He said at this point it would be good to leave it over night in this second water bath. So sorry - what a mess.

Contact one of those companies that come in and clean up after this sort of thing. They should be able to tell you how to remove soot.
