Default Help with scorch marks

I just bought a new iron that malfunctioned and scorched my fabric. A member had posted a method or solution to remove scorch marks. I forgot what she said to do. Could you please post again. Thank you very much!

Under the search box is an advanced search button. Click that and then put "scorch marks" in the box and choose "posts",and it will bring up a lot of posts on the subject. Hth, Gina

I had a bad scorch o a piece of fabric. Ever since then, I have always ironed on the wrong side of the fabric. That's been about 15 years ago. Never know when an appliance is going to act up. I also use a test piece.

I found this by searching old threads: http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...s-t226002.html

However, before using hydrogen peroxide on fabric, be sure to read this thread on the QB:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...g-t257130.html
and read what happened to Leah Day's quilt.

Personally, I don't think there is anything you can do to remove a scorch mark. Think about it. The scorch mark consists of burned fabric. Burned fabric is damaged fabric. Anything you do to try to remove the color of the burn will simply weaken the fabric even more. Using scorched fabric in a quilt will mean that years down the line there will be a hole in the quilt where the scorched fabric used to be. I wouldn't use the fabric or would at least find a way to cover up the scorched area -- say, with a piece made out of the same fabric hand appliqued over the damaged spot.

Thank you all for answering, I really appreciate the help. Prism99, you are right. I should not even think about using this fabric. It truly looks strange, looks more pink than scorched, it was a creamy Egyptian cotton. I did read about Leah Days quilt and the peroxide. Many years ago, I worked in the medical field and wore white.i cut my finger and got blood on my pants. I was going to wet it with cold water but my coworker insisted peroxide would take out the blood. I used the peroxide and it made a very yellow spot on those pants. I'm sure I could have treated the blood spot but that peroxide ruined those pants....thanks again!

Prism makes a good point. My advice is to determine whether it's the fabric that's scorched, or if you used starch and that's what scorched. Scorched starch is fixable.

Was the fabric ever washed? Whether it was washed or not, did you ever spray it with sizing or starch? I ask because it's possible that you simply scorched the sizing or starch that is on the fabric. If this is the case, the mark will wash out with soap and water. Unwashed fabric will have sizing still in it from the factory. If you have sprayed with sizing or starch, that adds an additional layer that separates the fabric from the heat of the iron. I once scorched the starch on a fabric I was ironing; washing took the starch (and the scorch mark) out!

I always prewash, I want to make sure the color won't run, fabric won't shrink, etc. I WAS using starch. I will try to wash it and see what happens. It was a very pretty, rather pricy fabric. Thanks for all the ideas and opinions. I really find it helpful and I do appreciate your responses.
