I think an open square of 12.5 x 12.5 is too big in any quilt, no matter what batting is used. Can you place an X in every block instead of every other block? Or perhaps Xs in plain blocks and a straight-line spiral in the log cabin blocks?

Thank you ladies, you have helped me a lot. X from the top to the opposite bottom. Didn't know if it would work, but you have helped me a lot. Now to rethink. Again thanks a million.
