For those who have made homespun quilts - did you wash and dry them first? Use any starch? I have some I'd like to use (love that pineapple quilt!), but don't know how to handle them.

Hello Carmen, in Western Australia Homespun is 100% plain coloured cotton fabric sold in all fabric shops so any pattern requiring plain pieces will do; I use it all the time, and use it for backings.

I did wash all of the fabric because the most of the colors are fairly dark and was worried about bleeding although I don't recall it being a problem. It does have a bit of a looser weave so I used a shorter stitch. You could benefit from some starch, however I did not use it. I think if you were making HST you would definitely need it. Hope that helps.

I am drawn to the Slanted Stars in Bonnie Hunter's quilt, Smokey Mountain Stars, and have a supply of homespun that was given to me. I have pre-washed it and will iron it well before cutting. Another simple pattern I like is Friendship Star in any setting.

I made my husband a Disappearing 9 Patch quilt using homespuns. Came out great and he loves it.
