Someone told me to use "panels" to practice on. Sandwich them together and FMQ away you go. You won't have alot of time invested but it sure give you practice...practice....practice. I still do this every time before I FMQ to give myself practice. Good Luck!

I agree with doing some small sample pieces. I've done a lot of them with scrap fabric. Mostly they turn into plate protectors to put between my china plates. lol

Find a UFO you've had in your stash for years and have a "no fear" session! Sign up for one of Angela Walter's classes (I suggest the Negative Space class), listen to her, and have a helluva good time just playing! This UFO was 5 years old and I never liked it. So loaded it up and just started playing. I put a different design in every single square and didn't care if I made mistakes. I smiled and moved on. Quilted the crap out of it, and had a bangin' good time just enjoying the process! Angela Walters made a huge difference in my fear of FMQ. She said don't worry about your mistakes, and once I got into that mindset, it made all the difference in the world. It's far from perfect, but can you see the mistakes??:

That's beautiful!

I FMQ a couple of potholders-mostly outlining leaves on pattern and lines.

I have 2 more ready to quilt. Going to get a little more adventurous on those.

Since I finally have a vintage DSM in a cabinet,it's much easier.

So far so good.

Thanks everybody.

Stack a sandwich of batting with cheap FQs together with a good bottle of wine and have a couple sips of wine and start playing. Theres no rules and you won't get it wrong. Just play and sip - play and sip - play and sip. But make sure there little sips not gulps. Lol.
