Two things, one-- does anyone do back basting applique?
two--- is anyone doing needleturn on J Michelle Watts " Fiesta de Talavera" quilt? It is absolutely gorgeous, and I'm having so much fun doing it. Wondered if I have any fellow travelers.Hoping to hear from someone. :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

I'm on #2block. I'm using fabric DD dyed for it. It is all Kona cotton. So far it is sheer pleasure. The scroll work works like a dream for needleturn. Happy, Happy, Happy!!!!

I almost bought that pattern at the Dallas Quilt Show last year - it was fresh off the press and one of the magazines had just had a spread about it that week - it's gorgeous!

Are you making yours on a light or black background? I'm probably going to go with black.

I haven't tried much of the back-basted needleturn - I'm thinking of making mylar templates and using the starch method - honestly, I'm so bad at this that it might help me keep my shapes more consistent.

I ended up buying this pattern instead - Sindy Rodenmayer sends it to you in EQ format if you choose, which I thought was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. (she also has it in hard copy and pdf's)

That is a lovely quilt but I think I will just admire yours. Looks way too time-consuming for me. I give you kudos!

OK polyparrot-on mars, that pattern you bought is on the same order as the Fiesta one. Beautiful! You asked about backbasting. You can find instructions on the internet. Just enter what you want and it will be there. It is basically this: trace your pattern one the WRONG side of fabric--Pin and then baste your applique piece to the Right side making sure to cover entire area of the pattern to be covered. Baste ON THE PATTERN LINE in a contrasting color thread. Then turn over and away you go. I trim a bit off but do my close trimming as I go. No more templates, no more freezer paper,no more glue or burned fingers pressing around shapes,no more misplaced pieces. It really is sure fire. Try it once just for the experience. You will love it!

Oh, I forgot, I'm doing it on bone Kona, but as soon as it arrives, I plan to start on Affairs of the Heart. That will be on black Kona. I'm nearly finished with the Garden Nouveau quilt by Vicky Lawrence. It is beautiful. Will post picture when it is done (top only). As you can tell, it is my way to do several at a time. It gives me a change of colors and fabrics. I'm doing the Farmer's Wife too so my Baby Lock won't feel neglected. FUN FUN FUN
