lay the top on the fabric at different widths and decide which is the most pleasing to you.

I like to place a narrow darker border to frame the quilt. Then I use Fibonacci numbers to decide the size of my borders.

I like to use a 1 1/2 inch border first, then one that is like ManThreads said and make that 1/2 to 3/4 the size of my blocks.

I think there is a ratio formula called Fibonari or something close to that that gives some good dimensions--I don't remember the specific # but it was something like 1-2-3-5 being the perfect ratio between objects.

Interesting post... even though I typically have followed patterns for the quilts I have completed thus far, I found some very helpful suggestions in this subject.

I don't have it, but there is a formula for what size border for the size blocks. Not sure where you might find it , maybe Google it. As for me I usually put what I like.
