This piece turned the water bright red as soon as got wet. I changed the water a couple of times and then threw it in the wash with some other pieces. After the loose dye was rinsed out/off, it didn't seem to affect/afflict anything else.

I'm not noticing any red smears on anything.

OOH, that is scary isn't it? I've got a brown one made and didn't wash it before. I'm afraid to start to wash it. But I'm gonna have to. Got one more side to finish binding.

I soaked these four fabrics together - I'm not sure if it was the teddy bears or the blue and mauve floral that is the 'guilty' one of these four. Probably putting the red one in there was not one of my brightest moves.

The three not teddy bear fabrics were kind of a mess! I got most of the stain out of the green and yellow print and I don't see anything bothersome on the small paisley. Maybe all the background got discolored evenly. The 1989 Hoffman is really smeary - and I wasn't able to get the smears out.

Interesting enough to me, the water wasn't all that discolored!

There is no staining of the white selvage from the teddy bears (Robert Kaufman).

Results like you're showing here are exactly why I pre-wash everything! I can't imagine working for many hours on a quilt, only to have a fade/stain situation happen in the wash when it's all completed

The bleed is from the floral, not the bears. Don't think I would have included the yellow/green in the same wash with any of those...you're more daring than I.

How do you know that it's from the floral, and not the bears? The smears do not seem to be consistent on the floral - some areas are 'good' - and others are smeary. The floral is Hoffman California (c) 1989.

I don't know why I put those four together. I would usually have segregated them until I knew how they would behave. Guess I wasn't particularly attached to any one of them.


Some of you may think - "oh, I would never ever ever let fabrics set together and make a mess like that"

And you probably would not do so intentionally.

But have any of you ever discovered damp/wet spots from a baby, an invalid, a pet, some sort of spill that you did not notice immediately?

I have and have used that same fabric and have had no problems with it. However I used it for a small wall hanging so it doesn't get washed much. Hope yours does well.

I guess my monitor color could be different than the actual fabric, but on this side of my screen, the dye color that bled is only in the floral, a mauve-ish tint like the lighter shade on the flowers. There is no blue-red dye in the bear fabric. Bleeding doesn't have to 'stick' in a consistent, all over pattern...it depends on the receptivity (is that a word?) of the fibers it comes in contact with.
