I want to do a quilt for my DH - found charm packs I like 42 in a pack. He like large blankets.
How many charm packs should I buy?
    Ideas for patterns?

    Thanks in advance.

know can I keep a secret from him? ;-)

That might turn out to be one expensive quilt! Might be wiser to buy some different fabrics & cut your own charms. You could get lots of variety that way, just a thought...

You don't say how large the quilt will be. Hard to estimate without knowing.

It all depends on the pattern and the size of quilt you want to make.
You're probably better off buying a fat quarter bundle or some jelly rolls
and layer cakes or just yardage.

Hi....don't know if this helps but a charm pack usually consists of approx 40 x 5"x5" squares......what I realised a little while ago is that a layer cake consists of approx 40 x 10"x 10" squares ...... if you cut them in half and then in half again it will give you the equivalent to FOUR charm packs.......this is pretty obvious when you put as simple as that....just took me a while to realise !!!!......it is usually a lot cheaper to buy a layer cake that four charm packs.
    Hope this helps

I think you are better of using yardage.....I have done charm packs, as the "basis" of the quilt colors and then added more squares that go well with the original colors. (did that make sense?)

Lets think of it this way without knowing the size of your quilt. Say 50"x75". That will take 176 5" pieces or 5 Charm packs (you can't split one).
That is about 3/4 yd of fabric. I found a price of $9.50 per pack.
The 5 then will cost you 47.50 plus shipping if ordered.
If you buy the necessary yardage you will need about 3 yrd total. At 9.50 per yd this will be 28.50.
On the other hand the additional cost may be worth it in saving of time and variety of fabric.

I would go with yardage too, I bought charms packs and there were just too many fabrics in it that just didnt mix with each other.
