Default how much overhang?

I am redoing an old quilt for a friend who doesn't like a lengthy drop. Just wants it to lay on top of the bed. I thought it was rather interesting, but to each their own. It got me wondering, how much do others leave hang over the edge? I'm curious to see if there is a length that is more common than others...

I want at least a 12" drop. Never had anyone say they don't want any drop.

I like a 10" drop. That way the quilt will still cover us when laying under it.

I like a long drop. I want it to at least cover the mattress then go about 2-3 inches over the boxspring which is covered by a bedskirt. I like them long because I don't want to fuss with it getting exact in the center. If one end is longer then it's fine. I also only like the drop on 3 sides. The top is for the pillows. Though I do often make matching pillow shams.

I have antique beds in my house. I like a 13" drop on my beds. The mattress is covered but the side rails of the beds still show.

This is what I prefer, too. Of course, this will depend on the mattress size and depth.

I like a longer drop -- want it to cover the sheets and meet the bed skirt when the bed is made.

I find this interesting, as all who have answered have related to the size of their bed, which is obvious. I don't like overhang, cuz you can't see it & I let the blankets go over the sides of the mattress...hmm...

I agree with those who like a larger drop to cover to the top of the bed skirt. My mattress with pillow top is 16+ tall.... so i usually do 18" drop hoping that it will cover past their mattress too.
