When I bought mine I was told that the co recommends Aurifil, which I love for peicing as well. I don't where you are but here the Viking reps are dealers, not at JoAnns, it is so much easier to work with a dealer. Mine has an on site repair person which makes it great because fewer machines get sent out to be fixed plus they'll test it out in front of you to see if they can fix the problems. Are you making sure you are oiling the machine, it needs lots of oil. I also like the Inspira needles from Viking, the eyes are rounded so the thread glides thru better. I use them for sewing, emb and quilting.

I have had trouble with that brand and weight of thread - so I switched my needle to an all-purpose # 18 by Singer and had much better luck. I wanted that thread specifically because of the variegated colors and have yet to finish the two large spools I bought.

I never had a tension problem with my 9" throated MegaQuilter. Loved it but just not a large enough throat so sold it for a stretched Juki 18. I'm thinking after reading you were using a Size 14 needle might be the problem. I use 50wt thread in my Innova and use at least a Size 18 needle. Change needle and see what happens.
