I have a friend who told me "the rule of thumb is" Do handwork for people who do handwork. They will understand and appreciate it. Also, they quite often gift the works they do and many times don't have any of their own work. So be it knitting, crocheting, quilting or needlework, no one "gets" it like someone who does it. I'm not sure I agree with this entirely but I know I've given a few quilts to people I thought would cherish them to find the quilts didn't mean what I thought they would to them.
