My new Daughter-in-law inherited her grandmother's featherweight. We don't know a lot about it. My son found the SN, AM778572. There were actually two manuals one was for a 221 and another was a 221-1. What is the difference? Which one is this machine?

Also, the wiring appears original (the old paper wrapped electrical stuff). My son is worried about it not being grounded and it appears to be starting to get really brittle. I personally would replace it but does that lower the value of this machine? Otherwise, he says it looks really well cared for.

I'd appreciate any insights.

Thanks. I just realized I probably put the question in the wrong section when I couldn't find it where I thought I posted it. Wow, that sounds like a very "la-la" moment for me.

There are lots of parts out there for a Featherweight. So, if you need to replace the cord it should be very easy to do. Also, some very good sites and threads here about caring for a vintage machine. The featherweights are very easy to adjust and keep running at top notch performance. I hope that she enjoys her new baby!

Hi Lab Fairy,

Your DIL's machine was made in Elizabethport New Jersey in September 1957. As for the difference between the 221 and the 221-1..... it's not really known what the difference is..... maybe the type of motor?

Hope your DIL enjoys he beauty!

Hugs

Caroline

Will she use the machine for quilting ? Is this a hobby you two can share together ?

Not that it matters for what you are asking , just curious  LOL

Not sure yet. There is about 7 hours of 2 lane roads and big priority differences between us. The last time she was in the area, I actually saw her for a total of 3 minutes (her family lives within 4 miles from my house). I would like to try to do something with her, but at the moment it looks very iffy.

I don't know what the difference is between the 221 and 221-1. The chart I have for the 221 says that your # indicates it was manufactured in 1957.
