I would like to end up with a 9 inch block, in a pinwheel and a nine patch or even just a 4. I thought I had seen a formula, thought I marked it, but do you think I can find it, no. Spent last night looking. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, appreciate it.

Graft the block on paper and cut and then add seam allowances.

Well, a pinwheel is based on a 4 patch, 2 across and 2 down. So you would need 4 HSTs to make it, and each HST would need to be 5" unfinished to finish at a 9" pinwheel. Here is a site with my favorite method for making the HSTs. http://www.kathkwilts.com/lessons/halfsqr.html

A nine patch is 3 across and 3 down, so to make one that will finish at 9" block, you would need to cut 9 3.5" squares.

Thanks for the information, the nine patch I figured out. And it is the same as your calculation. Now I have to think about the pinwheel. Hey, I have to say, I am just back from the dentist office had two teeth pulled, quilting kept my mind occupied, I figured the nine patch out while laying in the chair, were I there longer I might have given the pinwheel a go in my head. Who would have thought quilting would be good even sitting in the dentists chair. Something like calgon take me away....

Thanks I have several of the 9 patch done, going to try the pinwheel, this is not going to take a large number since I am going around a panel. A way to use up my reserve here.

Is the panel some multiple of 9"? If not, you'll need to border the panel. I find they are often strange sizes, like 20" x 25" and need to be bordered before blocks can be added.

No it is not a multiple of 9, but I think if I cut off some of the side edge it might work, have the blocks done and was looking at it last night.
