Well, a pinwheel is based on a 4 patch, 2 across and 2 down. So you would need 4 HSTs to make it, and each HST would need to be 5" unfinished to finish at a 9" pinwheel. Here is a site with my favorite method for making the HSTs. http://www.kathkwilts.com/lessons/halfsqr.html

A nine patch is 3 across and 3 down, so to make one that will finish at 9" block, you would need to cut 9 3.5" squares.
Thanks I have several of the 9 patch done, going to try the pinwheel, this is not going to take a large number since I am going around a panel. A way to use up my reserve here.
