I am trying to make my SIL a memory quilt. No pattern. The photos are different shapes and sizes. So how do I make the blocks come out the same size in order to put the strips or (I think it may be called sashing?)(I'm new to quilting)between them?
Does anyone have a pattern?OR a web page where I can get a pattern or purchase a pattern?
HELP!

I made memory quilts for my sister & brothers out of our mom & dad's clothes & pictures of them. I used parts of their clothing for sashing on each picture. Sometimes the pics were 8x10, sometimes 5x7. I just cut my sashing bigger to get them all the same side. Clear as mud? LOL

I would start with the size of the largest picture. I would use that in a block and come up with the block size. Then I would adjust the other size pictures by using a border on them, so they would end up the same size as the largest picture did. Then you could lay them out in whatever order or pattern you like.

I think that Grannie Annie's idea is the easiest for a beginner. I doubt that there is a pattern that will specifically deal with the sizes of pictures you have. One thing I did with photos was to put several of them on one page of the fabric that I printed...because they were different sizes, sometimes I got three on a page, sometimes I got four or five. For one large one, I made it the only one on the sheet of fabric. The fabric I use is Printed Treasures (I think that's the name) and it is 8.5 by 11 inches so it fits into the computer. Leave enough space around the edge to have a seam allowance and use that rectangle as the block size...if you prefer to use a square - add strips of fabri around the edges to make it 12 inches square..and yes, the fabric strips are called sashing.
PM me if you have specific questions.

How about making friendship stars, with photo's as the centre? Or make all the photo's up to the same size, using fabric"frames, and another block of the same size. Wait, and I'll post a pic or two of memory quilts I made.

Here's a free pattern that you could follow, it has space for different sized pictures or you could just wing it and keep playing like I did in mine.
My DH has such a large family I couldn't get any of the patterns to work so I made it up.

although this is a t-shirt quilt i made for a retiring school secretary, i did it the same way as explained about..i took the largest block and added a 2 inch sashing to it, and then brought all the others up to that size.
i did use a shadow effect to give it more pop..
