If you're using scraps, why not do a sampler? Have everyone make a different block, then put them together. Just be clear on what size you want your block to be. If you have some variation in sizes, you could assemble the top with sashing.

Whatever block you use, try to have one with extra fabric all around the edge so you can trim them to size. Look through Bonnie Hunter's free pattern section http://www.quiltville.blogspot.ca for something like Happy Scrappy Houses or Crayon Box etc.

Thanks for your help ladies. My Monday quilt group recently lost one of our members very suddenly, we had all been friends for many years, we want to make a quilt in her memory to donate to her favourite charity.

or individual or "framed" hexagons. where backing is brought over the edges to finish them. they could even be embellished like crazy quilting. I've seen many done this way and they are beautiful. European quilters do this often.

I would second the suggestion to look at Bonnie Hunter's site and especially this one:

It is shown in patriotic colors but would look great in scrappy with just the half-snowballs in a single, unified color. It's so quick because it makes up from just 4-patches and snowball blocks.
