I just finished my quilt sandwich and am staring at the quilt top wondering how I should quilt it. It's kind of a funny little scrappy strip quilt with a bunch of irregular squares and rectangles. So it's kind of hard to imagine what might look good.

I don't really want to use my free motion foot because I have sooo not mastered that yet and this quilt is for a friend's baby. I want it to look respectable not like sewing practice, haha. So I plan to use my walking foot but I really don't know where to go from there ... any ideas would be much appreciated!

Picture attached ... the only change from the photo is that there is now a four inch border made from the darker brown spotted fabric.

if you simply want to do straight line (walking foot) quilting why not just cross-hatch it? you could do stitch in the ditch down the rows- then cross the horizontal blocks in equal rows- or do a diagonal cross=hatch.
i pretty much never do straight line quilting- i free motion everything-but if you want to do straight line i think that either way would look ok on this.

I would suggest the "Baptist Fan" design (Bishops Fan from The Stencil Co) or Shells named by some.
It is easy to do with the walking foot. Lots of burying ends of threads but that goes fast especially if you have a Spiral Needle but the other self threading needles or big eye needles work as well. I have done several using this design. I can mark and quilt a 45x60 quilt if about 5 hrs if I stick with the task.

Stitch in the ditch would be easiest for the vertical rows. A fan or shells design woudl look very nice if you feel confident enough to try it

I probably would not attempt stitching in the ditch on this one. What you might like to try.... find a lid in the kitchen and trace 1/2 of it's shape down in one corner. Stitch....then stitch again 2" away from that line & keep going all the way across your quilt in a diagonal pattern. Lines will start and end in different places but will add a little "motion" to your quilt.

You could easily quilt each block separately by stitching 1/4 inch in from the seams all the way around.

Pretty quilt, I don't try to do stitch in the ditch, looks sloppy to me. When I do (very seldom) straight stitch lines I do them about 1/4" from the seams, looks much neater. I usually FMQ my quilts, not perfect but I love it.

Sounds like a good candidate for blue painters tape. I would use wide painers tape , using it to mark a chevron that either meets in the center or is offset. Stitch on the side of the painters tape with your walking foot. I am a huge fan of using painters tape for marking lines. It comes off , and no worrying about chalk or pencil lines.

If you want to use your walking foot but don't want to stitch in the ditch....I think I would straight stitch from corner to corner diagonally on each block going down each row of blocks (zig zags). Since the blocks are different sizes it would created a random zig zag pattern. It looks really nice and whatever you decide will look great.
