I bit the bullet and I'm doing a basic Free motion quilting pattern on some potholders just to try and I really like it so far! I have a question though... when I turn corners or don't go fast enough it skips stitches. Is this cuz i'm moving my hands too fast and the fabric is moving faster then the needle? Any help is appreciated. I'll add a pic...

I'm just learning myeslf. It seems to me that I need a medium fast machine speed and slow hands. After doing my whole quilt, I kind of got to where I could "hear" the right speed on my machine.
It looks to me like you are doing pretty well. I kept having problems with crossing lines because when I had to pull the quilt toward me I couldn't see exactly where I was going.

I've recently started a thread on FMQ to seek advice too. Tons of helpful recommendations by quilters on this board.

It looks like your work is good so far. Just keep practicing. It is the only way to improve your skills and doing small projects is the best way to start. I make quilt sandwiches about 15" square for practicing any new pattern I want to try before I do it on my project. You are right about getting the motion and speed balanced. I don't think you are "skipping" stitches, You are just getting a long stitch. When I started FMQ I found that stopping before I turned a corner or direction helped to minimize this and when starting to sew in the new direction I started with a few small slow stitches as I got up to speed! keep on stitchin!

When I was starting out I WAS skipping stitches, I was very frustrated,, I took my machine in and they told me to use a denim needle, or a needle specifically for quilting, it's easy to try to see if it makes a difference. Apparently they have less give and the needle wouldn't be able to bend it you pull your fabric a little
