No doubt, that this is a long term commitment. No doubt it'll be time consuming and tiring. No matter how much you enjoy doing it, this needs to be a good pay out.

No friend, family or whatever discount. Your work, time and effort are worth more than anyone will pay for, nor understand or appreciate.

When I make quilts I have a set prize, custom made quilts, restorations or alterations, will be done only if I get some money in advance.

You order, I'll get $ 200 USD upfront regardless. Should they be hesitant, well it's not worth my time. After finishing the quilt, there will be a full prize, shouldn't they want to pay, the quilt is mine and I keep the $ 200 of course.

Don't waste my time, don't cheat me of my work and quality. I know my work and the value of it, just because someone else thinks differently it doesn't make it so.

Depending on the time you spend working on it, I wouldn't go less than $ 2000.

Tell the customer upfront, so there won't be any unpleasantries.

The lady I know who hand quilts charges by the inch and by the amount of thread, I've never really understood how she figures it out but she has a formula that works for her. She did a quilt for me once, it was about 75" X 80" I think ( it was years ago) it was a fairly simple quilting design, not dense... And it cost me $385. That was about 17 years ago, I would expect prices to have gone up quite a bit since then

I charge by the square inch. I also charge at my cost for the backing and batting if I supply them. My minimum charge is .06 per square inch. At that rate I would charge $414.72 for the quilt that you have pictured. I would charge additional for finishing the binding etc. At least an additional $20. It looks like it is going to be bound by bringing the back to the front. I would charge them a little less to do that. If you have to bind around each motif at the edge separately charge them more. It would probably take me at least a month and a little more to quilt that. It seems like you are working at about my speed. Have fun.

Hi Don, Wish I could be more help $ wise but I have no clue as to that. I just want to say the quilt is terrific and you are lucky to be able to hug it for a while.
peace

I once sat down and figured out how much I would have to charge (minimum) if I had a business and just needed to break even. I figured in (roughly) all that I could, electric, thread, batting, fabric for front and back, even gasoline if I had to go to the store, plus the time it would take me to hand quilt it. I came up with 20 cents a square inch, and a 70 x 96 quilt would be $1344.00. However, it is very difficult to actually get a price like that. A lot of people do not think a person's time is worth it.

Just try to be fair to yourself.

Don you are doing a wonderful job enhancing this quilt with your talents. This is a big undertaking. I don't think most people understand the time and talent needed for quilting. No idea for cost but it must be worth at least one thousand dollars.
