I've recently heard the name "jellyroll quilt". Could someone please explain what this is and how it is made? Any pics?

There are many patterns that can use jelly rolls. I made my bargello using jelly rolls. I'm sure lots of our quilters have lots of patterns to offer.

A "Jelly Roll Quilt" is one that is made from a Jelly Roll of fabric. A Jelly Roll is a collection of fabrics pre-cut at 2.5", width of the fabric, from 20 to 40 pieces. Here's a link to one of the free Jelly Roll patterns on the Moda Fabric website: http://www.unitednotions.com/fp_sultry.pdf

Yes, anyone could cut their fabrics into these jelly rolls, but, here's what I really like about them. If you really like a line of fabric and want to do something w/the whole run of the line, it could be very costly and by buying the jelly rolls, it isn't. Not that jelly rolls are cheap...around $30...but, it is the whole line of that fabric. Many books and patterns out there to use and makes putting a quilt together quick and fun:)Plus showing off the fabric line. Also,there are charms, jelly cakes, layered cakes, etc. All of these refer to a certain size. Again,is the whole line of fabric. Hope that helps..skeat

I am actually working on a jelly roll quilt right now. I picked the heritage Moda jelly roll, and its fun. Its a great way to have a nice assortment of fabrics.

You can buy jelly rolls in many forms on ebay. You could buy a roll, with shades of blue, or green, etc. Just pay attention to what you are getting. Some homemade rolls may only have 10 or 20 strips, while the moda rolls have 40.

I have two rolls of Bali pops (80 strips) and want to do a Bargello quilts, but I don't know how wide to cut my strips. Any advice for me littlehud? I just keep looking at and touching these jelly rolls, and am sure they would be beautiful in a bargello!

Thank you Skeat, for the suggestion. However, I am hoping to make a bargello with "waves" in it made by cutting my "tube" of fabric into different widths before shfting them up or down and then resewing them.

I'm working on a log cabin quilt that uses 2 1/2" strips. It doesn't specifically say it's a "Jelly Roll" quilt but, it's the same size. I got two jelly rolls of Moda Portobello Market but I found that there wasn't enough of the light colors. Luckily I found a fat quarter set of just the Flax colors of that line on eBay. I am just about to finish 17 out of the 36 blocks (19 left to go) and I have only used 1 strip out of the second jelly roll just because I wanted that specific fabric. I cut strips from 6 of the fat quarters out of the Flax set and I may not neet to cut any more... I'll see when I get closer to done with the next 19.
