Default machine applique

I am doing a large wall hanging in machine applique. The directions for the project are not all that clear. I have cut out the large background pieces and am now wondering to what do I fuse them to. Should I have made them so the pieces overlap?

Without seeing what you are working on it is hard to say. The ones I have done I have always fused everything to a solid color back ground of fabric cut to the size of my project.

When I have done machine applique', I have traced the image onto heat and bond light or aother light fusable, then cut it out, place that onto my fabric (make sure you stick it on the WRONG side - ask me how I know!) cut it out, then fuse it to the background fabric - blanket stitch.

The pattern doesn't say. I have usually had a large piece of fabric and applied applique to it. In this instance the background is a scene of hills and a frozen pond. They are cut out of different fabrics. I wonder if I should have made the pieces larger so they overlap. Or is it ok to maybe applique the background to a light weight muslin? Would I use a fusible bond on such large pieces?
