Magnets and Machines
#1
OK...I bought a cute purse at a yardsale for $1.00. I threw it in the washer bc it had some lipstick and lip gloss on the inside.
The only problem was that one side of the magnetic snap came loose, and it was put together on the inside of the lining. I pulled it back up and thought I would machine stitch around it to keep it in its place...also thought I would use a decorative stitch so it would look like it made that way...but...it stuck to my feed dogs. I thought OOPS! maybe that wouldn't be good for the machine.
This has been a while, and the machine is fine. I was scared for a while, though, bc this is my SE 270D that I go on about all the time!
Anyone ever do this?? Do you know if magnets can damage a machine?

What do you mean it was stuck on your feed dogs? The snap was too thick or what? I have made many purses with magnetic snaps and I have occasionally accidentally hit one with the needle and it stuck, but it didn't break and it was fine. Sometimes if the snap is too thick it won't go through, and if that is the case you would have to sew around it like you said. :D

If you have a computerized machine you should never use a magnet pincushion or anything else magnetic around it. Yes, it will mess up the works of the machine. Marge PS. I had a purse with a magnet in it and it messed up my cell phone.

Wow, it messed up your cell phone? Did you keep your phone really close to the magnet or what? I knew magnets were bad for electronics if you put them on them for a long time. Jeez...maybe I should switch purses lol.

Magnets will mess up anything computerized. It also messes up the black strips on credit cards and stuff. I had a Kenmore machine, ca. 1984. that got the bobbin body magnetized somehow, according to the repair man, and it would not sew. So, I guess it can happen, however, in my case. I discovered that the needle bar was jammed on a heavy seam. It shortened the stroke of the needle and would not loop with the bobbin. After the $55 repair bill, I fixed it myself for free!

I know what you mean Miranda! When I made a new name tag for my friend, I put a magnet inside & when I was sewing it closed, it stuck to my metal throat plate! It didn't bother my machine, but my Singer isn't one of the computerized kind.
If you haven't had any problems so far, I think you're in the clear!

The magnet itself was stuck to the metal feed dogs/throat plate! I thought my feed dogs were down, but they weren't...then I realized magnets stick to metal!

oh! GRRRRRRRR!
I'm so angry with myself. I thought I would hold off until the last minute to put the magnetic snap in my purse I'm working on....AFTER I was finished sewing everything on it, so it wouldn't be near my machine!!!!!!!!!
BUT...I had to put the snap in before I sewed the top of the purse together.
And my presser foot for my other machine (non-computerized) is no where to be found! The kids won't leave anything alone. It was on the kitchen table last time I saw it.
I have GOT to get organized before it kills me!
