I have made many purses with magnetic snaps and I have occasionally accidentally hit one with the needle and it stuck, but it didn't break and it was fine. Sometimes if the snap is too thick it won't go through, and if that is the case you would have to sew around it like you said. :D

The magnet itself was stuck to the metal feed dogs/throat plate! I thought my feed dogs were down, but they weren't...then I realized magnets stick to metal! :oops:
