I would ask for more shirts if there are more available.

Better to have them and not need them, than to need more and not have them.

I too cut the shirts in strips and made it like a jelly roll race quilt. It came out to be a nice sized lap sized quilt. I used some of my dad's shirts and made them into a quilt for one of his brothers who found great comfort in having it. What could be softer than well worn shirts!
