I've fallen in love with a quilt in American Patchwork and Quilting magizine. It calls for a mix of "fall /autumn" fabric including plaids. The only fall colored plaids I can find are flannel. My question is : Are there any problems mixing reg cottons and flannel in the same quilt?
By the way this mag has little symbols that tell the level of experience need to make the quilt. Iam a beginner and this quilt is this level.

I have mixed flannel with regular cotton before and not had any problems.

If you mix them, make sure that you prewash!!! I don't usually prewash my fabrics but flannel tends to shrink more that regular cottons and even different flannels shrink more than others.

I don't usually prewash but, if I were mixing flannels with regular cottons, I would definitely prewash all of the flannel. Flannel can shrink an amazing amount!

I would even be tempted to wash and dry the flannel twice first.

Gennynut, do you WANT to use flannel or are you SETTLING for using flannel? We could help you find autumn colored plaid cottons if you'd rather use them instead. We love the hunt!! :)

    Hi
I guess Iam settling. The plaids I was looking for would be dark to med. Gold, green, browns, navy, burgundy, red, oranges etc. The largest pieces used in the patterin are 9 1/2 by 2 inches. I would need to get larger than that if flannel due to srinkage. You can see the quilt online at the American Patchwork and Quilting Magizine site. The quilt was the cover. it asks for a variety of fall fabrics but the plaids seem to be the problem. Does anyone know where I can get a scrap bag of various plaid pieces instead of buying a ton of different fabric?
This board is wonderful for helping and I already had someone find a few pieces of Raspberry for me for another project and I was hesitant to ask too much.

Kansas Troubles has some nice woven plaids. You can sometimes find them in FQ bundles at different online shops. Fabric Shack has a lot of woven plaids in yardage, around $7.99 a yard. There's got to be better deals somewhere out there. Good luck.

I have mixed flannels with cottons in raggy quilts only. I would imagine it would be fine in any quilt, provided that you prewash and dry! Hope it turns out great...let us know!

You'll have to sift through the sock monkeys and tractors on plaid fabric, the home dec fabric, and the flannels, but there are a lot of choices out there if you can spend some time looking.
    Fabric Depot http://www.fabricdepot.com/index.php...chstring=plaid
Fat Quarter Shop http://www.fatquartershop.com/index....Page_Id=15&T=1 (Plug 'plaid' into their search box, the hot link had too much personal info in it from cookies)
    Hancocks of Paducah http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/Item...plaid--srcin-1
Keepsake Quilting http://www.keepsakequilting.com/prod...rap%20bags.htmhas scrap bags, some are all plaid, but I'm not sure if they actually contain the fabrics pictured. Want me to run up there and look? I'll use any excuse to spend a few hours in that heavenly store!!
