80 5" charms
80 5" x 2.5" pieces
80 7" x 2.5" pieces

Total 2.5" strips for the 5" & 7" pieces = 24. If I cut all of the 5" pieces first, I would cut 10 strips 2.5" x WOF (assuming 40" usable). Then I'd cut 80 7" pieces, using 14 strips cut 2.5 x WOF. Total background needed would be 60" of 40" usable width. I will plan on 2 yds, just in case when I do mine.
JT shape cut ruler, is so worth the money and if you can get it at Joanna with a 40 or 50% coupon, all the better.
You can make all the jelly roll strips from your stash, so fast and save money too.

I have also had some jelly roll strips that weren't cut properly so I had to fudge seams.

I AGREE. Much more cheaper to make your own especially if using it for background. I just bought my first Tonga Treat 6 pack or at least I HOPE I bought it. I am planning on using whole yardage for the background.

Thanks for sharing! I bought the June Tailor Shape Cut Ruler too and I make all my own solid strips. I still buy jelly rolls when I want a variety of fabrics - but now make my own solid rolls.

I have a suggestion - try Craft Town Fabrics - they have Jelly rolls of the plain white fabric (42 strips) Kaufman brand for about $ 19 each. I was surprised when I found them. Also, Craftsy had some Kaufman Roll Ups in White and Snow for about $17 each. I like to use pre-cuts when I can - I just love the variety of fabric and I don't have to match anything up. Good Luck.

I just cut 2.5 inch strips from yardage--much cheaper than jelly rolls, and I can get exactly the shade of background fabric I want. You will need 12" of 2.5 inch strips for each charm (assuming 5" charms). Multiply that by the number of charms and you will get the total number of inches of 2.5 inch strips you need. Then divide by about 40 for the number of strips to cut. Remember to round up. Cutting the 2.5 inch strips isn't so bad, I got into a sort of rhythm and just cut, cut, cut. Any extra strips I cut I used for the binding.

Connecting Threads does not charge for cutting so their charms and jelly rolls are the same price as yardage - and their fabric is well priced. Not sure if one of their collections would suit, but it's worth a look.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions! I am going to get the June Tailor ruler and cut my own. I received coupon via email for 25% off total purchase from Joanne fabrics starting tomorrow and maybe it will not be on sale and I can use another coupon too. Walmart does sell these rulers too but no coupons, with them. Thanks so very much for your help and I will have to post picture when I am done with quilt. Again...thanks! Dianna

Go online to get a 40% off coupon at Joanns and veteran's day coming up you can probably find one for 50% off. Also they accept coupons from other retailers. Shop smart.

It looks to me after reading that you pay twice as much for precuts. Maybe we should take our stash and make jelly rolls and sell some.

JoAnn's does have some jelly rolls. I agree with previous comments, if you want variety that compliments the other strips a jelly roll is convenient and if they aren't on sale you can use a 40% off coupon, sometimes you can get a coupon on line, if you sign up with them they will mail you flyers, and you might be able to get one in your Sunday paper-they always have an ad in our Sunday paper. But if you just want a background color and pretty much the same you would do as well to pick you fabric and cut strips yourself.
