I like mug rugs about the size of a sheet of typing paper, a little smaller is okay. Use any print with food or drink motifs, try making crumb blocks, use orphan blocks, parts of old linens with embroidery or applique, I made oval ones at Easter and used up strips of fabric from my scrap pile in pastel colors and decorated the seams with short pieces of lace, braid, ribbon, and fancy stitches from my machine. The sky is the limit with mug rugs. They are lots of fun!

If you have orphan cups in your cupboards, make mug rugs to match the motifs on the cups. Or buy some cups at your local thrift shop, Try using crayons, markers, and drawing your own designs. This is a place where you can experiment to your hearts content.

Have fun! Basically in terms of size, think "bigger than a coaster, smaller than a placemat." I like a large mug and regular size napkin or small plate when I snack, so I kinda eyeballed it. I'm finishing up my 3rd one right now for a swap. The size our leader asked for was 9x5 but said there are no quilt police (and admitted that hers is a bit larger). Mine is about 9x7. Log cabin on one side, with three strips to the right, and a strippy backing. All scraps. Fall colors.
I made my first as a hostess gift, I taught a friend to make one, and now this is #3. I think I might have started a new addiction!
I saw a cartoon on FB with a guy looking at the end table of his living room. Caption was to the effect of "A quilter's home has a rug-to-mug ratio of 6:1."
