So my daughter's birthday is coming up and she will be officially 6. She really wants a sewing machine and I feel she deserves one. I don't want to get her a toy, seeing as she's started her 3rd quilt and really has a gift for quilting. She's been practicing free motion quilting...WOW! Any ideas on a good machine for about $100.00? I will say, she's works on my expensive machine and she is very mature and respectful while sewing.

OK well its not in the $100 range but I got my 5 yr old a Baby Lock Grace A-line series.. She loves it.. (I do too! plus I now have a portable machine to 'borrow' when i have a quilting class.. ) It has a start & stop button- Since she cant reach the floor anyhow. AND (this is one of my favorite features !!) a sewing speed controller- Slow or fast and all the speeds in between.. Shes on slow but working her way up..

The "Hello Kitty" is a 3/4-size Janome. Target and Sears online both have it for about $110 (as does Overstock.com). Here is a link to one:
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html...00B8WSJ2&AFID=

There is another "Hello Kitty" that is a 1/2-size version for less money and is not recommended.

If she would prefer, I think you can get basically the same machine in plain white at Sears for about the same cost.

The 3/4 size Janome is a real machine, not a toy. The Gem series of Janome machines is similar but come with more bells and whistles and a higher price.

I bought this one for my GD and she loves it. She has learned a lot and it isn't a "toy".

You might go to your local sewing machine company. They usually have used machine pretty low priced. I have bought three used Janomes and one Brenina from a sewing machine company. They had serviced all of them and they work great. The last Janome was fairly new and it was about 125.00 the others were 50.00-75.00

Keep us posted on her work. It's wonderful to hear about the little quilters around us.
